There was major market news this week with the announcement that Eeva Hakoranta has left her position as Chief Licensing Officer at InterDigital. She is to be replaced on an interim basis by Julia Mattis. First at Nokia and for the last few years at the US R&D and licensing business, Hakoranta has established herself as one of the patent dealmaking world’s absolute superstars, as well as a staunch defender of the FRAND/SEP system. It will be fascinating to see what she does next when she has pretty much done it all already.
Elsewhere, Wilus announced that it had agreed an amicable bilateral deal with Lenovo that gives the Chinese company access to its portfolio of Wi-Fi 6 SEPs. Reports also emerged that US IP royalties could be targeted by China as part of the escalating trade war between the two countries. In Europe, meanwhile, a Polish government minister told the European Parliament that EU member states were ready to resume discussions on the EU SEP regulation, despite the Commission having stated it intends to withdraw the proposed legislation.
